A well known Jesus story from the bible is depicted in this painting.
A woman is caught in adultery. (Where’s the man? Doesn’t say).
She’s surrounded by a condemning crowd.
Jesus bends down and writes something into the dirt with his finger. What did he write? Doesn’t say. And then he says two things that have become iconic.
The first: “You who are without sin cast the first stone.” The crowd disperses. Because nobody’s perfect and they know it. If justice is the judge, we’d all be dead.
The second. “Go and sin no more.” Did she take that advice to heart? Doesn’t say. Do we take it to heart when we get a second chance after a mistake? It’s a door that we can either open or not.
The getting forgiven part is easy. This takes some grit. “Go and sin no more”.
