The Politics of Jesus

This Sunday, January 27, we explore the politics of Jesus as they are presented in Luke 4: 14-21.

Jesus unrolled the scroll and read:

“God’s Spirit is on me;
he’s chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor,
Sent me to announce pardon to prisoners and
recovery of sight to the blind,
To set the burdened and battered free,
to announce, “This is God’s year to act!”

Many believe that politics and religion don’t mix but it cannot be denied that Jesus was very political in both his words and actions.  He pushed people into action to seek justice, particularly for those in need.

Jesus
stood up,
unrolled the scroll
and announced to
the assembly
and to us
that God is in our midst
this day.

Earth is holy now.
Anoint our being and doings,
Touch all our days,
with grace.

Let us honor this world
and its people.

From here on out everything Jesus does will be grounded in a politics of good news, release, sight, freedom, and divine favor. His politics are revealed in healing the sick, casting out demons, forgiving sins, feeding the hungry, raising the dead. His politics stands at the centre of and is the content of his crucifixion and resurrection.

We look forward to worshiping together as a church family on Sunday.
