This classic painting by Caravaggio in 1601 is a bit odd at first glance. But a closer look reveals its origin It depicts the well known biblical story of Thomas. There’s an adjective used to describe him that we are all aware of, Christian or not.
Thomas is like most of us. “I need to see it to believe it.” And without question Jesus asks us to believe a lot: In the resurrection. In the presence of the Holy Spirit. In the power of prayer. Those are big asks. And Thomas is the first among us to express some understandable reluctance.
How do those of us who have never seen Jesus with our own eyes ever come to believe?
