Thank God for Thomas. Because he’s the one who says what we would have said: “I won’t believe it until I see it.”
So Jesus says, as depicted in this painting, “You want proof? I’ll give you proof. Touch my side and you’ll see.”
Today, you and I don’t have that advantage. And so Jesus looks over Thomas’ head, and beyond the room in which the disciples were gathered, and out into all time and space and generation, and he says “Blessed are those who believe but do not see.”
It would be great if we could see the risen Jesus with our own eyes. How do we come to believe without seeing? I’ll say this, and it’s undisputable. Millions upon million have come to believe over countless generations. So it’s possible.
